TAIPEI/HONG KONG (Reuters) – Asian subcontractors of Apple began to manufacture a cheaper version of iPhone 4 equipped with a memory of eight gigabytes, according to two sources aware of the situation.
Flash memory which will equip this iPhone is designed by a Korean company, said Tuesday one of the sources, declining to specify the name of the manufacturer.
Apple currently provides in-memory flash Toshiba Japanese and South Korean Samsung Electronics.
The sources required anonymity due to the confidential nature of information.
Apple, which has a reputation for keeping the secrecy on its projects, refused to comment on the information.
The current iPhone 4, released in June 2010, is equipped with a memory of 16 or 32 GB. The 8 GB version should be launched in the coming weeks, said the sources.
Some analysts argue that the cheaper version of the iPhone could boost sales in emerging markets.
